A C-13 contractor builds, alters and repairs fences of every type, plus a surprising list of related items: corrals, animal runs, railings, guard rails, game-court enclosures, backstops, playground equipment, posts, flagpoles and gates.
Masonry walls are the one exclusion CSLB names. A block or brick wall belongs to a masonry contractor, even if it serves as a fence. Wood, vinyl, chain-link and metal fences all fit under C-13.
Typical work under C-13
- Wood, vinyl and chain-link fences
- Manual gates
- Tennis and sport-court enclosures
- Corrals and animal runs
- Flagpoles and backstops
- Playground equipment
Work that needs a different license
- Block, brick or stone walls: C-29 Masonry
- Motorized gate openers: C-61/D-28 Doors, Gates and Activating Devices
- Decorative wrought-iron railings: C-23 Ornamental Metal
Tips before hiring
- Confirm the property line before the crew sets posts. A survey costs less than moving a fence.
- Ask how deep posts go and whether they will be set in concrete.
- If a pool is involved, ask whether the fence and gate design meets local pool barrier rules.
- Ask what happens to the old fence. Removal and haul-away are often priced separately from the new build.
